Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- J. D’Arcy Whalen passed away after a short battle with cancer on April 30, 2007. He was 79 years old. Mr. Whalen was born and raised in Burlington and graduated from Cathedral High School. Upon graduation, he joined the Army Air Force and served in the South Pacific for two years attaining the rank of sergeant. After serving his country, he graduated from St. Michael’s College receiving a B.A. in business.

He met his wife, Winifred H. Berube, at a Trinity College dance and they were married upon graduation. D’Arcy continued his education and received his masters degree in business administration from Michigan State University in 1957. He enjoyed a life-long career with the Grand Union Company spanning 40 years and at the height of his career he became district sales manager, supervising 15 stores with 350 employees, grossing 1 million a day in sales.

After the death of his first wife, D’Arcy was blessed with a second chance at love. He met and married Margaret Shallow Waldrop from Brattleboro. They have enjoyed 35 years together through life’s sweetness and sorrows. D’Arcy and Margaret enjoyed traveling together and are blessed with many friends. D’Arcy was proud of his Irish heritage, and was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed duck hunting, fishing, and chopping wood. He was a lifetime member of the Elks, Eagles and Veterans of Foreign War clubs.

He is survived by his wife Margaret Whalen and seven children, Shaun and Angie Whalen of Acworth, Ga., Sheila and Matt Cook of Lancaster, Pa., Dan Whalen and Sharon McQueen of Marina del Rey, Calif., Michael Waldrop of Clinton, N.J., Jeff and Christine Waldrop of Fairport, N.Y., Kerry Whalen of St. Albans, Paul and Lisa Waldrop of Ithaca, N.Y. Surviving in addition are 12 grandchildren; a brother, John Whalen and his wife Cindy of Bennington. Also, surviving is his beloved dog, Lily.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Winifred H. Whalen; his daughter Wendy Whalen; his parents, James and Cornelia Whalen; and his sister Justine Smyle.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Vermont Veterans Home for going above and beyond in the love and care they gave D’Arcy.

A memorial service will be held at the chapel of the Vermont Veterans Home on Friday, May 4, 2007, at 3 p.m. There are no calling hours scheduled.

Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family.
