ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. -- James Edward (Ed) Amos, 73, died Saturday, July 17, 2004, at his residence on St. Simons Island.

Mr. Amos was a native of Pittsburgh, Pa. and had been a winter resident of Glynn County for the past 11 years. He was also a summer resident of Portland, Maine.

He was a graduate of Taylor Alderdice H.S. in Pittsburgh, attended Wooster College in Wooster, Ohio and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh.

Mr. Amos served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and later became the founder and CEO of Monument Industries in Bennington, Vt. He was an avid baseball fan.

Mr. Amos is survived by his wife Mary E. Amos of St. Simons Island and Portland; a son and his wife, Lawrence W. and Rebecca Amos of Bennington, Vt.; two daughters and their husbands, Miriam and Mark Nihart of Bothell, Wash. and Diane and David Woodcroft of Melbourne, Australia; a stepson, Arthur F. Britto; three stepdaughters, Lisa A. Leonard, Ellen P. Foster, and Jennifer L. Resnick; four grandchildren, Jeremy Nihart of Bothell and Ashley, Douglas and Alyssa Amos of Bennington, Vt.; 12 step-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, William and Sondra Amos of Trafford, Pa.; two nephews, Craig and Mark Amos; and a former spouse, Joann Amos of Bennington, Vt.

A celebration of Mr. Amos’s life will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, July 24, 2004, at his home on St. Simons Island. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of the Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA 31525 and to the Youth Alternatives Program, 1 Post Office Square, Portland, ME 04101, for those in the Portland area.
