James Holley Gilbert

1919-2014 Dorset resident James Holley Gilbert died Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, after a stroke. He was 94. Jim was born April 4, 1919, in Chicago to George Holley and Helen Herrick Gilbert. He grew up in Ardmore, PA, and graduated from Harvard College, Class of 1940, with a bachelor's degree in American history. In fall 1940, he joined the Philadelphia artillery unit of the National Guard, and was posted to Hattiesburg, MS., before being accepted to the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School. On a Sunday, he attended church in nearby New Orleans, and there, was invited to dinner by Mrs. Addley Hogan Gladden and her daughter, LaReine. Jim and LaReine married after World War II, and last August, celebrated their 66th anniversary. During the war, Jim served as a lieutenant in North Africa and Italy. After V-E Day, he was transferred to the engineer operations staff of II Corps, the interim army of occupation for Austria. In 1947, Jim was hired by United Airlines, and he and LaReine Peggy as she is known to many settled in Denver. He served in numerous management positions in the company's headquarters in both Denver and suburban Chicago for 34 years. When he retired in 1981, Jim and Peggy permanently moved to Dorset. Jim always considered Dorset home, and valued the family roots that stretched generations before him into the soil and community. He was a master genealogist, a sexton at Maple Hill Cemetery and active church leader for many years. Jim researched and created the Roll Call of Honored Dead of Dorset, and read it each year at the Dorset Memorial Day service. Jim is survived by: his wife, LaReine; children Ken (Peggy) of Dallas, TX, Holley of Vancouver, WA, Peter (Cindy) of Montpelier, Anne (Al) of Oberlin, OH; grandchildren Allen, Blair, Jimmy, Carolyn, Julia and Tamzen; sister, Elizabeth F. Gilbert of Dorset; exchange student-son Jean-Pierre Sautereau (Francoise) and daughters Elodie, Delphine and Aurelie, of Paris, France. MEMORIAL SERVICE: A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 18, at the United Church of Dorset and East Rupert. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in his memory be made to the Dorset Nursing Association, Meals on Wheels or the Wounded Warriors Project c/o Brewster Funeral Services P.O.
