James F. Hamilton

1935 - 2016 James Francis Hamilton, 80, a resident of Elm Street in North Bennington passed away unexpectedly Monday April 4, 2016 at his residence. He was born at the family home in Shaftsbury, VT on May 23rd, 1935.He was the son of the late John Francis and Edith M. (Jesperson) Hamilton. Mr. Hamilton received his early education in Shaftsbury and was a graduate of North Bennington High School. Mr. Hamilton obtained his degree in commercial air conditioning and refrigeration and owned his own business which he worked part-time. He married the former Sheila Ann Statia on June 16, 1956 at Saint Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. For 38 years Mr. Hamilton was employed at Stanley Tools in Shaftsbury; after retiring Jim went to work at the Bennington Free Library where he worked for 17 years. He most recently worked at The Lighting Place in Manchester, VT. Jim was a former member and honorary member of the Shaftsbury Fish and Game Club and a former member of the Bennington Elks Lodge # 567 and the Shaftsbury Fire Department. In the 1960's Jim served as the Shaftsbury Fire Warden and was a Boy Scout Leader. An avid outdoorsman, Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking Mount Tabor. He had a passion for birds and loved his cat "Freebie". He also enjoyed photography and woodworking. Survivors include his wife, Sheila Hamilton of North Bennington; their children, Kathleen Hamilton Peterson of Bennington, Mark Hamilton of Pownal, Steve Hamilton of Shaftsbury and Kimberly Becker of North Bennington. Fifteen grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren. Three brothers, John and Richard Hamilton both of Shaftsbury and Robert Hamilton of Bennington along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL SERVICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday April 9th, at 11:00 a.m. The burial will take place in the family lot in Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington, VT. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Friday April 8th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. If friends desire contributions in memory of James F. Hamilton, they may be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home located at 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
