James F. Harmon

1954 - 2016 SHAFTSBURY James F. Harmon, 61, passed away unexpectedly January 4, 2016 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. Jim was born in Rockville Centre, NY on August 4, 1954 the son of the late Thomas M. and Julia (Pridon) Harmon. He was raised and received his education in Port Jefferson, NY and went on to study at the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, NY. Jim "turned wrenches" at Browns Auto Repair in Bennington and ultimately took on ownership of the business. Most recently, he was employed as a machinist at K & E Plastics. For over 30 years, Jim was a highly skilled master mechanic with an exceptional ability to repair machinery with precision, a passion and love he shared with his father. Jim loved the outdoors, animals, and gardening. He had a passion for playing guitar and played in a band throughout his early years on Long Island. He enjoyed sailing on the Long Island Sound, had a deep appreciation for hunting in the woods of Vermont, and enjoyed spending time with his family. Jim's legacy lives on through the gift of organ donation. Jim is survived by his son, Lucas Harmon of Baltimore, MD, daughter, Elizabeth (Liz) Carruthers and her husband, Matthew of Saratoga Springs, NY, former wife, Carol Whitelaw of Saratoga Springs, NY, brother, Thomas R. Harmon and his wife, Sara of Brunswick, NY, sister, Patricia Cannistraci and her husband, Tony of Averill Park, NY and many nieces, nephews and cousins. SERVICES: A celebration of the life of James F. Harmon will be held Friday evening, January 8, 2016 from 5 to 7p.m. at Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home located at 213 West Main Street, Bennington, VT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to the Second Chance Animal Shelter in Shaftsbury, VT c/o Hanson-Walbridge & Shea Funeral Home, P.O. Box 885, Bennington, VT 05201.
