James Jelley Sr. POWNAL, VT. James R. Jelley Sr., 88, of 43 Moonrise Drive died Thursday, April 3, 2008, at his home. Born in Brattleboro, he was a son of Fred and Alta Robinson Jelley. In his younger years, he worked on church steeples and stained glass windows. On Dec. 29, 1944, he enlisted in the Army with the medical detachment 1270th engineers and, as a private first class, he administered first aide to the combat wounded. He was employed at Pratt & Whitney and Colt Firearms in Connecticut. After the war, he was employed in both the chain saw and nursing home industries, but spent most of his time in the automotive business working for Scarfoni Ford, Joslin Dodge, and was a co-founder of Stamford Auto sales. At the time of his death, he was associated with the Jelley Auto Sales in Pownal, with his son, Gary, and grandson, Gary Jr. for 25 years. Mr. Jelley was a longtime member of the Pownal American Legion Post 90. He enjoyed NASCAR races and spent years traveling to Lebanon Valley, N.Y., where his sons, "Butch, "Skeeter" "Lyle", and Wayne, and son-in-law, "Chuck" Ely raced. He leaves his wife, Pamela Shea Jelley, whom he married March 13, 1965 in Elton, Md. Besides his wife, he leaves 11 children, Clarence "Butch" Jelley and his wife, Bev, of Andover, Jo-Ann Ely of Hoosic, N.Y., James Jelley Jr. and his wife, Prudy, of North Pownal, Lyle Jelley and his companion, Robin O'Dowd, of Roebuck, S.C., Keith "Skeeter" Jelley and wife, Francine, of Bennington, Gary Jelley and his wife, Kathy, of North Pownal, Sharon Nichols and her husband, William of Pownal, Pam Jelley McGarvin and her fiancé, Rick Cuddihy, of Hoosic Falls, N.Y., Wayne Jelley and his companion, Heather O'Dell, of Pittsfield, Mass., Derryl Jelley and his companion, Patty Goodrich, of North Adams, Mass., Cheryl Jelley and her companion, Don Neilsen, of Adams. Mass. Cheryl was his chief caregiver during his final illness. He also leaves 35 grandchildren, including Jodi Morrison and her husband, Lee, of Pownal, who were there with soup and sandwiches daily and a helping handl 43 great-grandchildren. and many nieces and nephews, including James and Barbara Wilson of Williamstown, Mass., who drove him to his doctors' appointments in Albany for years. He leaves two brothers, the Rev. Ralph Jelley and his wife, Dorothy, of Greenfield, Mass., Harold Jelley of Springfield, Mass.; a sister, Sylvia Hodgeman and her husband, Jack , of Petersburg, N.Y. He was predeceased by a his former wife, Gladys Jelley Hall; by a son-in-law, Charles Ely and by brothers and sisters, Lyle Jelley, Fred Jelley, Rachel Thibodeau, Marguerite Levitt, Violet Stevens, Mildred Wilder and Grace Wilson. FUNERAL NOTICE: Services will take place Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME for FUNERALS, WEST CHAPELS, 521 West Main St., North Adams, Mass. Burial will follow in the Jelley Family Cemetery in Petersburg, N.Y. Calling Hours at the funeral home will be Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. and on Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Memorial donations are to the Renovation Fund for the 3rd floor at North Adams Regional Hospital through the funeral home.
