James Colgate "J.C." Jerome

1924-2012 James Colgate "J.C." Jerome, 88, a well known resident of Bennington, Vt., died unexpectedly Monday October 8, 2012 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

He was born in Yonkers, NY January 23, 1924. He was the son of the late William Travers Jerome Jr. and Hope (Colgate) Jerome. He received his early education at the Old School House in Old Bennington and graduated from Riverdale School in Bronx, New York. In April of 1943, following his first semester at Cornell University he joined the 10th Mountain Division of the US Army, a highly trained ski troop stationed in the Italian Alps. The 10th Mountain Division destroyed five elite German Divisions. General Hays called their assignment the most important and hazardous in Italy. For his service James was awarded the Bronze Star. James Colgate Jerome was the only Jerome cousin of Winston Churchill to participate in combat during World War II. Following WW II he returned to Cornell University and in 1949 graduated from Cornell's College of Agriculture with a B.S. in Genetics. He returned to Bennington where he became a successful dairy and cattle farmer. He served as president of Fillmore Farms Inc.

He married the former Susan Fuller and they had three children, Virginia Sheldon Jerome, William Fuller Jerome and James Colgate Jerome Jr. He later married Marie Stafford on December 28, 1977 in Miami Beach, Florida.

In earlier years Mr. Jerome served as a town selectman and was the former chairman of the State Recreation Department.

An accomplished amateur golfer. Mr. Jerome won several Vermont State Amateur Championships along with a runner up finish in the 1951 New England Amateur. He had also played in the 1954 US Open at Baltusrol. For over a half century Mr. Jerome along with his family owned and operated the Mount Anthony Country Club in Bennington. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the game of golf with all of the up and coming junior players around Mount Anthony Country Club. While wintering in Miami, J.C. was a member of Doral Country Club

Survivors include two sons, William Fuller Jerome and his wife Sandy of Tavernier, Florida and James C. Jerome Jr. and his wife Vicki of Bennington. A son in law Joseph B. Kelley of Vienna, Virginia His grandchildren and great grandchildren. Five step children: LTC Edward P. Stafford. USA (Ret), Atlanta, Georgia; Harte P. Stafford, Esq., Bethesda, Maryland; Robert P. Stafford, Esq., Portland, Oregon, ; Judge Peary S. Fowler, Key West, Florida and Dr. Gregory P. Stafford, DDS. Three sisters Hope Graves and Evelyn Lindsey both of Bennington and Ann Miles of Springfield, Missouri. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was pre-deceased by a daughter Virginia Sheldon Kelley and a brother William Travers Jerome II.

FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial reception and luncheon to celebrate the life of James "J.C." Jerome will be held at the Mount Anthony Country Club in Bennington on Friday November 9, 2012 at noon.

The burial will take place in the family lot in the Old Bennington Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
