James M. Houran

Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- James M. Houran, 42, died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at his home in New York City.

Jim was the husband of Lori Haskins Houran, whom he married on June 8, 2002, at a seaside ceremony in Maine, and the father of Jameson Averill and Michael James, all of New York City.

Jim was born Oct. 3, 1963 in Bennington. He was the son of Patricia (Knapp) Houran of Williamstown, Mass., and Garry Houran of Bennington. Jim graduated from Mount Anthony Union High School in 1981 and went on to attend the University of Vermont from 1982 until 1986, when he received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.

He moved to New York City in 1987 and began a successful career in advertising. He worked for a variety of publications, including the Village Voice, Outdoor Life, Sports Illustrated, and, most recently, Parade Magazine. Jim’s career took him around the world and gave him access to many major sporting events, which he shared with his family and friends.

He enjoyed literature, sports and travel, but he especially loved his family and friends. In addition to his immediate family, Jim leaves three sisters, Tammy Bourn of Shaftsbury, Kathy Houran of Bennington and Anne Houran of Portland, Ore., as well as three brothers, Gary, Joe and John Houran, all of Bennington. Jim’s maternal grandmother, Mrs. Alice Knapp of Bennington, survives, as well as his many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held June 10 at the First Congregational Church in Old Bennington at a time to be announced.

Contributions in his memory may be made to the Michael and Jameson Scholarship Fund in care of their mother, Lori Houran, through the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
