WILMINGTON -- James Richard “Rick” Hughes, 52, a resident of Ballou Hill Road, died on Tuesday Oct. 9, 2007, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., following a courageous battle with cancer. Rick was born in East Orange, N.J., on March 16,1955, he was the son of the late Wayne H. and Marie (Brady) Hughes.

At a young age Rick’s family moved to Portland, Ore., where he attended local schools, they later relocated to Cherry Hill, N.J., where he graduated from Cherry Hill High School East, following high school he attended Monmouth College majoring in psychology.

He began his career as a building appraiser and had worked for GAB Business Services first in New Jersey and then Vermont. He had worked for the past several years as a self-employed building contractor, specializing in carpentry. With his talents he gave much of himself back to the community, as was his philosophy -- share the gifts with others with which you were given.

He had worked extensively with Habitat For Humanity, the last project being the Whitingham House, completed in November. He began the project as the general contractor (supervisor), with his dedication to the cause, he soon became involved in many roles during the construction process. He was also instrumental in the construction of the Pool Learning Center for Dyslexic Children in Marlboro, donating countless hours to the design and construction. He volunteered his talents at the Twin Valley High School and Deerfield Valley Elementary School. Being environmentally conscious he volunteered each year with Green-up Day and while in Massachusetts, with Earth Day . Rick enjoyed kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing and woodworking. He was a member of the Social Lodge 38 Free and Accepted Masons in Wilmington and Our Lady of Fatima Church.

He leaves his wife, the former Barbara Schaub, whom he married at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Aug. 25, 1979; their son Jonathan R. Hughes of Worchester, Mass.; their daughter Jennifer L. Hughes of Burlington; a brother Gregg Hughes of Marlton, N.J.; two sisters Gina DellaMonica of Marlton, N.J., and Margo Ciurlino of Phoenix, Ariz.; his Godfather Herbert Curley of North Jersey; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 11 a.m. at Social Lodge 38 on Main Street in Wilmington. Members of the Lodge will conduct the service. Following the service the family will receive friends at their home on Ballou Hill Road until 7 p.m. Saturday evening, all are invited.
