CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- James Richard LaBrake, 24, died unexpectedly, Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy. Born Wednesday, April 4, 1979 at Samaritan Hospital, he was the beloved son of Brian D. and Cynthia J. (Lever) LaBrake of Cambridge. James’ early school years were spent in Lansingburgh. The family moved to Cambridge in 1991 and James graduated from Cambridge Central School, class of 1997. He played on the CCS basketball team.

James wanted to travel more than anything else. Shortly after graduation he enrolled in the National Outdoor Leadership School and spent several months in Kenya, Africa. He returned to the United States and started school at Seminole Community College in Florida and worked for the Daewoo Co., which sent him on a company tour to Korea. After his return to the United States, James started making plans for his next trip, working two jobs to save money for it. He went to Thailand and fell in love with the country and with a lovely young woman there. He returned home in April and began making preparations for their future. Realizing that a college degree was necessary for success, he started at Hudson Valley Community College this past fall and was excelling.

He was also working as a resident counselor for the NYS ARC, Rensselaer Country Chapter at their Brookview and Maple homes in Troy.

Along with his parents he is survived by a sister, Kristen LaBrake of Cambridge; a nephew; a paternal grandmother; a paternal grandfather; a great-great aunt and uncle; a great-aunt and uncle; 12 aunts and uncles; many cousins and his fiancée Wadsana Wong Su Wan of Chaing Mai, Thailand.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Thursday, Nov. 6 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge.

A service to honor and remember James’ life will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 7 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Woodlands Cemetery, Cambridge.

The family requests memorial donations be made to NYS ARC, Rensselaer Chapter, 415 River St., Troy, NY 12180.
