BENNINGTON -- Dr. James S. Shea, M.D., 77 , a resident of Duffy Drive, Bennington died Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, surrounded by his family, at the Vermont Veterans Home, following a long illness.

Born in Bennington, Nov. 13, 1925 he was the son of the late William Bernard and Catherine Blanche (Seward) Shea. He received his early education in Bennington and was a 1943 graduate of the former Bennington High School. He later attended Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. and the University of Vermont. After receiving his undergraduate degree he graduated from the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington. Dr. Shea then served his residency in Beverly, Mass.

A World War II Navy veteran, he served from 1944 until 1946. Dr. Shea married the former Jean Shorb Pearce in Baltimore, MD in 1949. Together with his late brother, Dr. Donald F. Shea, Dr. Shea was in private practice in Bennington for many years until his retirement in 1985.

Dr. Shea was elected to represent the town of Shaftsbury in the Vermont Legislature, a position which he held for three terms. After leaving the Legislature Dr. Shea served on the Vermont State Board of Medical Practice. Dr. Shea was very active in the local community and on the statewide level. He served on the Mount Anthony School board during the 1960s and 1970s. While in the Vermont Legislature he was the legislative representative on the Board of Trustees at the University of Vermont.

He enjoyed woodworking as a hobby. His home and family was his primary interest. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose.

Survivors include his wife, Jean S. Shea of Bennington; five children, Sharon Shea Keneally and her husband Gerald M. Keneally of North Bennington, James S. Shea Jr. and his wife Jade Shea of Essex Junction, Michael J. Shea and his wife Loraine of Mechanicsville, Md., Erin E. Parmenter and her husband Bruce K. Parmenter of Essex Junction, Lauren M. Shea and her companion Paula Miner of Barre; 13 grandchildren; a sister, Marilou Remington and her husband H. Glenn Remington of Bennington; nieces, nephews and cousins. Dr. Shea was pre-deceased by two brothers, Dr. William B. Shea Jr. and Dr. Donald F. Shea.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday September 1, at 9:15 a.m. with a prayer and from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington at 10 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday Aug. 31 from 2 to 4 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be offered Sunday afternoon.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
