James Williamson
1929 - 2014
SHAFTSBURY - James E. Williamson, 84, a resident of Stateline Road, died peacefully Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Bennington on Sept. 1, 1929, the son of James S. Williamson and Olive B. (Galusha) Williamson. Jim received his education in Bennington and later attended Vermont Technical College in Randolph, where he studied Agriculture.
Following the unexpected death of his father, Jim returned to the family operated State Line Hill Farm where, along with his wife and mother, they kept the farm running smoothly while raising a family.
Mr. Williamson was a member of the Vermont Woodland Association, Bennington County Soil Conservation, Grange, was a Mason and volunteer with the White Creek Fire Department. Over the years Mr. Williamson received many farming awards, including some from the County Extension Service Board, the U.S.D.A., Future Farmers of America, and, of course, the Bennington County Maple Sugar Makers Award of Merit for Maplerama.
Jim loved his beagles, smoking his pipe, riding his four wheeler and always had a story to tell when friends and family stopped by. He always found time to bowl in a league at Bennington Lanes with his fellow farmers and, along with his wife Martha, was a great supporter of 4-H Camp Ondawa in Sunderland. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, working in his greenhouse and watching his train show on Monday night. Jim said all tractors should be red! When you name your tractor Harry, you know he was serious.
Jim married the former Martha Amadon on Aug. 27, 1950. Mrs. Williamson died May 7, 2004.
Jim is survived by his children, Linda Barden (Mark) of Shaftsbury, Susan Williamson-Fenton (Tom) of Blaine, Wash., Carol Gamez of Juneau, Alaska and John Williamson of Shaftsbury; his grandchildren include James and Cassie Gamez, Stephanie Parfomchuk, Kay Lyn, Tanner and Wren Williamson; a great-grandchild, Ashlynn Parfomchuk and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He is also survived by a sister in-law, Ellie Williamson; an Uncle Warren and Aunt Charlotte Galusha and a brother-in-law, Gerald Amadon and his special friends, Bob Willard, Peter Niles and Arthur Barber.
He was predeceased by a brother, Alan Williamson.
FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of life will be held at the family farm at 601 State Line Road, North Bennington, on Saturday June 28, 2014, from 1 to 3 p.m. Friends are welcome to bring their favorite "Jim Story."
