James E. Wright

1929 - 2014 WOODFORD James E. Wright, 84, a resident of Woodford, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, at his home, surrounded by family. Born in Bennington on Feb. 14, 1929, he was the son of Frederick and Cherry (Burgess) Wright. He received his education in local schools. After finishing high school, Mr. Wright served in the U.S. Army Air Corps at the end of World War II and then in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. Mr. Wright was a recipient of numerous awards and medals for his brave and outstanding military service overseas. On Nov. 16, 1951, Mr. Wright married the former Erma O'Neal in California Settlement, New Brunswick. Canada. After his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he returned to Woodford, where he and Erma raised their family. Mr. Wright owned several businesses and worked throughout his entire adult life. He was the co-founder of J & J Concrete Steps & Allied Products Corp. and he worked several years as a truck driver. Mr. Wright then moved to Maine where he owned Jimbo's Truck Stop in Turner, and several race horses. He was a horse enthusiast who enjoyed training and racing horses throughout New England. With no interest in retiring, Mr. Wright owned and operated Jimbo's Lawn Service until the time of his death. Mr. Wright was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed staying at the family camp in Murray Hollow, Vt. He had also traveled to Alaska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Canada to hunt and fish. His family was his primary interest and he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events. Survivors include his children, Steven John and Susan Wright, Ronald Frederick and Pae Wright, James Owen and Laurie Wright, all of Woodford, Robert Allen and Ada Wright of Bennington, Michelle Prouty and her husband, David, of Bennington, Jeremy Davis of Pownal, Ryan and his wife, Beth Davis of North Bennington, Penny Davis of Pownal, and Victoria Coffman of Gray, Maine. He leaves 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; several brothers and sisters; a close cousin, Rhoda Connell and an uncle, Elmer "Junior" Burgess, both of Bennington, and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Wright was predeceased by his wife, Erma; son, Arnold Wright, and daughter, Louwana Wright. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014, at 12 p. m. at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, with the Rev. Robin Greene, officiating. Interment will follow in the Center Shaftsbury Cemetery where Mr. Wright will be buried with full military honors, performed by The Vermont Air National Guard's Honor Guard. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
