Jane Treman Gilbert

DORSET, VT Founder of Northshire Performing Arts, Jane Treman Gilbert died peacefully at home in Dorset, Vermont, surrounded by family.

Born in Ithaca, New York, on February 3, 1931, Jane attended The Madeira School ('48) and Bennett Junior College ('50). In 1954, Jane wed Dr. David Paton and, in 1958, they had one son, David Townley Paton.

Jane enjoyed a fulfilling 30-year career in real estate at Douglas Elliman and Brown Harris Stevens in Manhattan.

Jane was a lifelong lover of travel and the performing arts. In 2004, true to her passion for the performing arts, Jane founded Northshire Performing Arts, which brought such renowned talent as Salvatore Licitra and Frederika von Stade to Southern Vermont. In addition, Jane introduced HD Opera to Burr and Burton Academy and endowed the Treman Music Room at Maple Street School. Along with her beloved husband of 38 years, Clinton Gilbert, Jr., she endowed the Gilbert Music Series at Phillips Exeter Academy.

Jane is survived by her husband Clint; her son Townley Paton (Shannon) and granddaughter Cricket; stepdaughter Lili Harris (Gary) and grandchildren Walker and Anastasia; stepdaughter Nina Pedersen (Jess) and grandchildren Olivia and Oskar; stepdaughter Annie Gilbert; stepson Geoffrey Gilbert (Helen) and grandsons Ethan and Davis; and granddaughter Elizabeth Gilbert.

Jane was predeceased by her older brother, Arthur B. Treman Jr.

All who have known and loved Jane will miss her quick wit, her wry sense of humor, her generous spirit and her tremendous courage in the face of a long and arduous battle with cancer.

A Gathering of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, August 8, 2012 at 4 p.m. at the Southern Vermont Arts Center.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to Northshire Performing Arts in Jane's memory.
