Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Jane Sharaf, 65, a resident of East Street in Bennington, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2007, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Jane was born and raised in Princeton, N.J. She received her masters degree in vocal performance at the University of Illinois and was a Fulbright Scholar. She performed as a contralto soloist, specializing in oratorical repertoire. Jane taught voice at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and at Westminster Choir College, Princeton, N.J.

Later, she joined the staff at Princeton University as a temporary secretary and worked her way up to associate director of admissions.

In 1978 she became headmistress of the Solebury School in New Hope, Pa., becoming the first female to head a coed private school. Jane was the music director at Mount Greylock High School in Williamstown and was responsible for putting on their musicals.

Since retiring she pursued her passions, music, cooking, gardening, assisting young people with their college applications and chasing her grandchildren.

She is survived by Fred Sharaf, her husband of 35 years; her parents Wilbur and Thelma Young; brother Steven Young; sister Mary Bragado; son Jon Sharaf; daughter Megan Moore; son Carter Sharaf; daughter Kathryn Battistella; and five grandchildren, Luke, Dolores, Mae, Mia and Eve.
