Janet M. Daniels

1939 - 2015 SHAFTSBURY Janet M. Daniels, 76, widow of George F. "Sam" Daniels, a resident of Hidden Valley, died unexpectedly on Sunday, March 15, at her residence. Born in Bennington on Jan. 19, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Albert G. and Mildred M. (Griffis) Mears. Janet received her education in North Bennington and was a 1957 graduate of North Bennington High School. Janet and Sam were married in North Bennington on June 15, 1957. Mr. Daniels died July 22, 1998. In earlier years Janet was employed locally at the County National Bank and later at Catamount Bank. Over the years she worked as a bookkeeper for several local businesses including The Pharmacy, CB Sports, Betts Trucking, and both the Putnam Credit Union and the Bennington County Teachers Credit Union. A resident of Shaftsbury for over 50 years, Janet was a former town auditor and worked at the polls on election day for many years. She was a longtime member of American Legion Unit 13 Ladies Auxiliary in Bennington. Janet and Sam enjoyed many years together spent camping, snowmobiling and riding their motorcycles. Janet was an avid pitch player, played dominos, enjoyed watching the cardinals at her bird feeder and will be remembered for her outstanding chocolate pies. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Scott G. and Mary Beth Daniels of Shaftsbury; a granddaughter, Brenda (Kevin) Achorn; two great-grandchildren, Madyson and Mikayla Achorn; a sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Charles Goodrum of Bennington; a very special sister-in-law, Sandra Hamilton of Shaftsbury; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Janet was predeceased by a sister, Martha Daniels. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services celebrating the life of Janet Daniels will be held from the MAHAR SON FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, March 21, at 1 p.m. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Private committal services will take place at the convenience of the family at Center Shaftsbury Cemetery. Should friends desire memorial contributions in Janet Daniels memory may be made to the either Second Chance Animal Shelter or the Battenkill Valley Health Clinic through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201. All members of American Legion Unit 13 Auxiliary are asked to meet at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Saturday at 12:30 p.m. to conduct services in Janet's memory.
