Obituary Condolences

MANCHESTER -- Janet Eustis Kelly, 88, died June 1, 2005, at her Equinox Terrace residence, where she had resided since 1999. Mrs. Kelly was born in Cambridge, Mass., the daughter of Lawrence and Ottolene (Taylor) Eustis. She attended the Winsor School in Cambridge. She served in the American Red Cross in Munich, Germany, after World War II and later became the personnel officer of the American Consulate General in Frankfurt, Germany.

She married Col. John J. Kelly, U.S. Army, retired, in 1954 at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Frankfurt-on-Main, Germany. She was a talented sports enthusiast, a gifted amateur tennis player and an avid skier. In 1966 at the Weston Field Club in Weston, Conn., she won the ladies singles, ladies doubles and mixed doubles tennis club championships all in one day, a tennis foray never duplicated at Weston. She once played in a promotional tennis exhibition with Billy Talbert and Gardnar Mulloy. An avid skier, she traversed the packed powder slopes of the Swiss Alps at such ski meccas as Garmisch, Germany, the Zupspitze and Kitzbuhel, Austria.

She was a real estate broker in Fairfield, Conn., and Manchester. In Fairfield she was very active with the Girl Scouts organization and was a Brownie troop leader. She came to Vermont in 1985 to ski and found herself thriving as one of the 270 volunteers who serve at Hildene, historic home of Robert Todd Lincoln in Manchester. She was a member of the Vincent Club in Boston, the Weston Field Club in Weston, Conn., the Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport, Conn., and the Dorset Field Club in Dorset.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah K. Vigneron; two granddaughters, Kelly and Blair Vigneron, in Fairfield, Conn. She was predeceased by her husband, father, mother, sister and brother.

Friends may call on Sunday June 5, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Brewster Funeral Home in Manchester. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. at The First Congregational Church of Manchester Village, followed by a graveside service of committal in Dellwood Cemetery in Manchester Village. The Rev. Dr. Steve Berry will officiate.

Donations may be made to Hildene C/O Brewster Funeral Service, P.O. Box 885, Manchester, VT 05255. To send the Kelly family e-mail condolences, consult www.sheafuneralhomes.com.
