Janet A. Richey

1934 - 2013 BENNINGTON Janet A. Richey, 79, widow of Carl L. Richey Sr., a resident of West Road Park, died Sunday evening at her home, following a long illness, surrounded by her family.

Born in Rutland on May 20, 1934, she was the daughter of Lawrence E. Moore and Bessie (Gardner) Moore. She received her early education in the Bennington schools and was a 1952 graduate of Bennington High School. Following high school, Janet studied nursing in Brattleboro and later in Pittsfield, Mass.

She enlisted in the Navy and served with the U.S. Naval Hospital Corps. It was during this time while stationed in California, she met her future husband who was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California, serving with the Marine Corps. Janet and Carl were married in California on May 25, 1956. Carl died Dec. 27, 2001.

Janet, in her earlier years, was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Bennington, where she played the organ and sang in the choir.

Janet had a deep love for nature, especially for birds. She enjoyed gardening, trips to Maine and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her children, Freda Waterman, and her husband, Byron of Shaftsbury, Carol Wilcox of Bennington, Ann Dailey of Shaftsbury, Carl L. Richey Jr. of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Debra Richey of Bennington. Janet is also survived by several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a son, David Richey.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.

We are truly grateful for the guidance and support of BAYADA Hospice who enabled us to take care of our mom in her own home. It was comforting to our mom knowing that her girls were there every day, caring for her and at her bedside. A promise kept.

Should friends desire, contributions in Janet A. Richey's memory may be made to BAYADA Hospice through the office of the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
