Jannette L. Bishop

1929 - 2016 POWNAL, VT Jannette L. Bishop, 87, a resident of Lincoln Street, passed away September 3, 2016 at Berkshire Medical Center, surrounded by her family. Born in Pownal on February 1, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Mildred (Crosier) Mattison. She received her education in Pownal schools, graduating from the former Bennington High School, class of 1947. Jannette married her beloved husband, Ralph M. Bishop, on September 8, 1948 in Pownal. She worked with her husband Ralph in the family business -Bishop's Express, the Ladd Brook Motel and Restaurant, Ben - Powell, Salem Supermarket and then worked in food service at the Pownal Elementary School for 25 years, retiring in 1996. Jannette enjoyed reading, spending time with loved ones, and was an avid bowler. She was a 30 year member of the Pownal Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the East Pownal Ladies Auxiliary for 25 years to present. She was instrumental in starting the Pownal Rescue Squad from 1978 to present, driving ambulance as well as serving as treasurer from 1982-2013. She served as Treasurer for Pownal Fire District #2 from 1991-2013, volunteered at bingo for American Legion Post 90 and the Pownal Fire Department, and was a member, Past President, and Treasurer of the Vermont State Ladies Auxiliary from 1954-2010. Jannette is survived by her son, Gary Bishop of Pownal, her brother, Clarence Mattison (Dona) of Navert, FL, her sister, April Knapp (Robert) of Pownal, grandchildren, Amanda Morse (Tyson) and Taylor Bishop both of Pownal, great-grandchildren, Alexis and Kenley Morse, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph, brothers Chester and Perry Mattison and a sister Lenora Beals. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services for Jannette will be held Friday September 9, 2016 at 11am at the Pownal First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the family lot in Oak Hill Cemetery in Pownal. Visiting hours will be held at the church Friday September 9, 2016 from 10-11am one hour prior to the service.
