BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Jean H. Ryan, 59, wife of Thomas H. Ryan, a longtime resident of Depot Street, Bennington, died unexpectedly Monday, June 2, 2003 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, N.Y. Born in Bennington April 20, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Earl S. Hurley and the former Helen A. Ryan, who survives.

She received her early education in Bennington at St. Francis de Sales Academy and was a graduate of the former Bennington Catholic High School class of 1962. She later was a graduate of St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Pittsfield, Mass., where she received her nursing degree.

Mr. and Mrs. Ryan were married at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on Oct. 24, 1970.

She enjoyed reading. Her home and family were primary interests.

Mrs. Ryan was employed on the nursing staff of St. Luke’s Hospital in Pittsfield from September 1965 until July 1966. She was employed at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center, then Putnam Memorial Hospital, as a registered nurse on Aug. 1, 1966 and was promoted to head nurse of the intensive care unit in 1967. At the time of her illness she held the position of financial analyst.

Survivors include her husband, Thomas H. Ryan of Bennington; a daughter, Jennifer Ryan of Shaftsbury; a grandson, Ryan Decell of Shaftsbury; her mother, Helen A. Hurley of Bennington; a sister and brother-in-law, Julianne and Howard Shea of Ballston Lake, N.Y.; two nieces, four nephews, three great nieces and cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday, June 5 at 9:30 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10 a.m., where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be celebrated.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m., when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be offered Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
