Mrs. Jeanne Lucy Mattison, age 78, a resident of Airport Road in Shaftsbury, VT died on Saturday afternoon, at her home, following a long illness.

She was born in Shaftsbury on July 16, 1928 and was the daughter of the late Edgar “Bear” and Lillian (Jepson) Harrington. Jeanne attended local schools and is a graduate of North Bennington High School, the Putnam School of Nursing where she received her degree in nursing. Jeanne was a member of the first graduating class at Putnam Memorial Hospital. and from Heaton College with her degree as a Registered Nurse. Mrs. Mattison had been employed as a private duty nurse in the area, at the Putnam Memorial Hospital and at Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington.

On June 23, 1952 she married David Mattison in Bennington. Mr. Mattison died on September 22, 1999.

She enjoyed doing folk art, she was an avid quilter, stenciller, rug hooker, and chair caner. She enjoyed antiquing, tag saling and bird watching, and was a member of the Quiet Valley Quilters. Jeanne was involved with the American Legion Post#13 Auxiliary in Bennington, and had attended several reunions of the U.S. Hanson with her husband. She was an avid card player and a member of the “Friday Night Dinner Club”.

Jeanne is survived by three sons: David H. Mattison of Shaftsbury. Thurston O. Mattison of Shaftsbury, and Alan L Mattison of Shaftsbury. She has two daughters; Sally and Kenneth Nolan of Milton, VT, and Betty Ayers of Huntington, VT.

Her sisters and brothers-in-law, Florence and Robert Nolan of North Bennington, and Donna and Chet Taft of Manchester VT. her brothers and sisters-in-law; Milton and Gert Harrington of Bennington, Charles and Candy Harrington of Crown Point, NY and her sister Mary Palmer of Bennington.

She leaves her grandchildren; Vera LaPorte of Las Vegas, NV, Hillary LaPorte of Colorado Springs, CO, Tyler Ayers of Boston, MA ad Sierra Ayers and Casey Ayers, both of Huntington, VT. Jeanne also has several nieces nephews and cousins.

The predeceased members of her family include; Lori Lil Mattison, David “Bucky” Bucklin, and Millie and Bernard Harris, and Mary Ellen Mattison

Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 6, 2007 at 11:00AM at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington with the Reverend Deborah Estey, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Bennington, and the Shaftsbury Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will take place privately at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Thursday, July 5, from 5-8PM.
