NORTH BENNINGTON -- Jeanne Redfield Bonynge, 80, most recently of Wilmette, Ill., and Arlington, Va., passed away on July 12, 2005, while briefly living on the west coast.

Born in Bronxville, N.Y., on Feb. 10, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Humphrey and Amy (Cowling) Redfield. She was married to Russell Bonynge Jr. on May 15, 1948 at the home of her parents.

Jeanne is remembered for her personal energy, social conscience and commitment to volunteerism. Her dedication to community was evident in her roles as docent, member of the Junior League, Mariner leader, greater Chicago area chairwoman for UNICEF 1969-1973, president of the League of Women Voters, crusader for clean air and water, outstanding citizen of the village of Wilmette 1972 and political candidate.

In 1970 she was awarded a master’s degree in library science and went on to be appointed lead law librarian for the U.S. Tax Court in Washington, D.C. Jeanne received her private pilot’s license in 1943 and canoed uncharted regions of the Allagash River in remote Maine in 1990. She also enjoyed tennis, skiing, canoeing, kayaking and hiking.

Upon retirement, Jeanne took pleasure in visiting her homes in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Nantucket, Mass., and East Boothbay Harbor, Maine. She also traveled extensively overseas, exploring the world’s cultural diversity while she continued her philanthropy with many organizations.

Jeanne is preceded in death by her husband, Russell, and daughter, Terry. She is survived by her son, Jeffrey, of East Grand Rapids, Mich., and five grandchildren from Terry and Jeffrey’s respective families: Jennifer, Joshua, Caroline, Jeffrey Jr. and Emily.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, Dec. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Bonynge family lot in Grandview Cemetery, Shaftsbury.
