Obituary Condolences

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- Jerome E. Caplan, 77, of Montclair Drive, West Hartford, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, after a brief illness.

Born in New Haven, he was the son of the late Murray and Ruth (Ginsberg) Caplan. He graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and Yale Law School. He served as clerk to U.S. District Judge J. Joseph Smith. He began his distinguished 53-year career with the law firm of Rogin Nassau in 1952. He was a respected member of the Hartford County Bar Association and the Connecticut Bar Association, and a member of its commercial law and bankruptcy section.

Early in his career, he served as president of the Connecticut Civil Liberties Union, and in recent years he served as a director of the Greater Hartford Legal Aid Foundation. He was a past president of the Emanuel Synagogue of West Hartford, past president of the Greater Hartford Jewish Community Center, trustee of the Jewish Community Foundation and a life member of the board of directors of the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford. He was an avid gardener and cook, and enjoyed photography, skiing and traveling. He lived life to its fullest, making every day special, and taught others to do the same.

He leaves his wife, Eleanor (Neiditz) Caplan; a son, Richard A. Caplan and his wife Laurie of West Dover, Vt.; a daughter, Martha Jo Caplan of West Hartford; two grandchildren, Jonathan Joseph Caplan and Nathan Jerome Caplan; a brother, Alexander N. Caplan and his wife Lynne of Paradise Valley, Az.; and a sister, Elinor B. Sandler and her husband Herbert of Palm City, Fla.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 8, at noon, in the sanctuary of the Emanuel Synagogue, 160 Mohegan Drive, West Hartford, with Rabbi David Small and Cantor Sanford Cohn officiating. Interment will follow in the Emanuel Synagogue Cemetery, Wethersfield. A memorial period will be observed at his home Friday following the funeral through Sunday evening.
