Jerome Sargood Sr.

1934-2010 EAST ARLINGTON Jerome E. Sargood Sr., 76, a lifelong resident of East Arlington, passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 27, 2010, following a courageous battle with cancer. His final days were spent surrounded by his family that he treasured.

Born in Bennington on Mar. 12, 1934, son of the late Hosie D. and Hallie Hall Sargood, he grew up in Arlington, where he graduated from Arlington Memorial High School, Class of 1953.

In June of 1954, he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy M. Keough, of East Arlington, at St. Columban's Church (now Christ Our Savior).

Jerry was a well known local businessman. He owned and operated Jerry's Gulf Service Station on Route 7A for nearly 30 years.

Jerry's main interest was spending time with his family. He was an avid sportsman. He loved hunting and fishing with his son, friends and family.

For many years, he was an active member of Ducks Unlimited and a former instructor for the Hunter Safety Course. He served as a volunteer fireman for the Arlington Fire Company for over 40 years and had served as Assistant Chief.

Jerry was a loyal sports fan, especially of the Boston Red Sox and Celtics.

He was a longtime communicant of Christ Our Savior Church (formerly St. Margaret Mary's and St. Columban's).

He leaves his wife of nearly 56 years, Nancy K. Sargood; a son, Jerome "Skip" Sargood Jr. and his wife, Jackie, of Manchester; a daughter, Karen Cross and her husband, Kenneth, of North Bennington; his beloved granddaughter, Lynsie M. Stroffoleno of Sunderland; a step granddaughter, Hannah Cross of Bennington; sister, Mary Skidmore and her husband, Kenneth, of Shaftsbury; as well as several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

FUNERAL NOTICE: At the request of Jerry, there will be no calling hours. The Mass of Christian Death and Burial will be offered on Friday, Apr. 30 at 10 a.m. from Christ Our Savior Catholic Church (formerly St. Margaret Mary's) in Arlington with Reverend Thomas Mattison, pastor, officiating. Cremation will follow at Vermont Cremation Service in Bennington.
