Jesse C. Ameden

1929 - 2014 ARLINGTON Jesse C. Ameden, 85, died on Dec. 4 following a long illness, surrounded by his loving family. Jesse was born on Sept. 14, 1929, in Manchester, the son of Wesley and Hazel Ameden. After growing up on the family farm in Bondville, he graduated in 1949 from Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester, where he starred in baseball and football and was a member of the Burr and Burton Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1948 state championship football team. Following service in the US Air Force during the Korean War, Jesse settled in Manchester, where in 1954 he married Janice Markey, with whom he celebrated his 60th wedding anniversary this past June. Jesse worked with his brother Richard in the construction trade for many years. His artistry, creativity and craftsmanship with wood and other building materials will endure in many homes in southern Vermont. In later years, Jesse was employed by Orvis and by members of the Perkins family. His love of his profession is evidenced by the fact that he worked full time until only a few weeks before his death. Jesse was active in his community. He was a founding member of the Manchester Rescue Squad. As an original member of the Manchester Recreation Committee in the 1970's, he helped envision and lay the groundwork for the Dana L. Thompson Memorial Park. He took special joy in working with young people and for many years coached Little League and Babe Ruth baseball. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Target Program and building at Burr and Burton. The library there is named after him and for his dedication to the project he was honored with the Burr and Burton Alumni Service Award. Jesse loved the outdoors (he was a member of the Bromley Mountain ski patrol in the 1940's), animals, country music, restoring antique Mustangs and Jeeps, and most especially spending time with his family. In addition to Janice Ameden, his wife of 60 years; he is survived by his five children, Gary (and Lorri) Ameden, of Peru, Vt., Lynne (and Ed) Campbell of Manchester, Michelle Ameden of Manchester, Sandi Ameden (and Mark Novotny) of Northhampton, Mass., and Todd Ameden (and Meg Kenny) of Manchester; his grandchildren, Colby Ameden, Robert Black, Ryley Ameden, Caleb Ameden, Tison (and Katie) Campbell, Cailen (and Ben) McCormick, Anders Campbell, Eamonn Campbell, Jesse Sendra, Eli Sendra, Devon Spencer (and Eric Kilanski), Logan Spencer, Jackson Ameden, and Will Ameden; and his great-grandson, Campbell McCormick, in whom he took special delight. There will be no services. Contributions in Jesse's memory may be made to the Target Program at Burr and Burton Academy, PO Box 498, Manchester, VT 05254.
