BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Joan B. Kinney, 71, widow of Robert J. Kinney, a resident of Carpenter Lane, Bennington, died Sunday, Dec. 19, 2004, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Bennington March 16, 1933, she was the daughter of the late Richard and Beatrice (Cummings) Williams. She received her education in Bennington and was a 1951 graduate of the former Bennington High School where she was a member of the majorettes.

Mr. and Mrs. Kinney were married at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on July 26, 1952. Mr. Kinney died April 24, 2002.

In earlier years, Joan was employed as a secretary at Tansitor Electronics in Bennington. For many years, she worked as a waitress at various restaurants in the Bennington area, including the Paradise, Four Chimneys, Four Squires and Bennington Station.

Mrs. Kinney’s family was her main interest. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Group, had a passion for music and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Melinda and Scott Dickie of North Bennington, Wendy and T.J. Ripley of Shaftsbury and Colleen Racicot and her fiancé Mike Capuano of Bennington; three sons and daughter-in-law, Gary and Doreen Kinney of Shaftsbury, Michael Kinney and Jeffrey Kinney, both of Bennington; 10 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren, Dane, Stephanie, Tyson, Shawn, Robert, Travis, Cory, Bree, Logan, Kiona, Carson, Haley and Ryan; a brother, Stephen Williams of Bennington; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Kinney was predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Debbie Kinney.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of the First Baptist Church in Bennington, officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery. Should friends desire, contributions in Joan B. Kinney’s memory may be made to Bennington Area Hospice Inc. or the Vermont Lung Association through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
