MADISON, Maine -- Joan Cummings Franzen, 80, died at her summer home in Skowhegan on Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003 after a long illness.

Mrs. Franzen was born in Boston, Mass., on Feb. 9, 1923 the daughter of Willard and Helen (Warren) Cummings. She grew up in Skowhegan, attended Bennington College in Bennington, Vt. and in 1942 married Ulrich Franzen at the South Solon Meeting House in South Solon. (The Franzens divorced in 1962).

Mrs. Franzen was involved with the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in many capacities; as a trustee from 1969 to 1986, and as director from 1975 to 1979. The South Solon Meeting House has also been a major interest of hers for many years. She has been a major force in its upkeep, maintenance, support, and preservation.

In later years she bought a winter home in Bristol, where she was active in the development and support of Round Top, the art center there.

Joan is survived by her three children, Peter Franzen of Los Angeles, David Franzen of Kailua, Hawaii and April Franzen of East Boothbay; her sister Muriel Palmer of Bennington; many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A private funeral service will be held at the South Solon Meeting House on Tues., Nov. 18, 2003. Donations may be made in Joan’s memory to the Round Top Art Center, Business Route 1, Damariscotta, ME 04543 or to the South Solon Meeting House, P.O. Box 326, Skowhegan, ME 04976.
