EAST DORSET -- Joan Gordon Davidson of East Dorset, 76, passed away on Oct. 18 after a courageous battle with cancer. Joan was born in New York City on Sept. 17, 1931. She started ballet at a very early age and danced at the 1938 World’s Fair. She went on to study at the Metropolitan and Carnegie Hall. After Adelphi University she became a stewardess with National Airlines followed by a position as a Corporate Travel Consultant with American Airlines. She met her husband, Bob, on Feb. 19, 1957 at London Terrace in New York City. They were married on Jan. 30, 1960. Joan and family lived in the New York and New Jersey area until coming to East Dorset 15 years ago.

Joan’s first love was her children and she closely followed their pursuits in the areas of acting, education and sports. Joan loved skiing, playing tennis, biking and gardening. She volunteered and participated in events for the Manchester Music Festival, Village Light Opera, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Hildene, the Newcomers, Equinox Terrace, Wednesday on Wheels (WOW), Silver Griffins, the Garden Club of Manchester, Southern Vermont Arts Center and the Dorset Players.

Joan leaves Bob, her beloved husband of 47 years, her son Bill, of East Dorset, her daughter, Suzanne Shelley, and her husband, Richard, of Medfield, Mass., and their five children.

Joan was predeceased by a daughter, Lisa Ann, who died at age one and a son, John, who died at age 29.

There will be a celebration of Joan’s life at the First Congregational Church across from the Equinox Hotel in Manchester, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. This will be followed by a reception at the family’s residence in East Dorset.
