BRATTLEBORO -- Joan M. Dunlevy, 79, of Tyler Street in Brattleboro died on March 18, 2005, at the Springfield Hospital in Springfield.

Born in Brattleboro Oct. 12, 1925, Ms. Dunlevy was the daughter of Grace (Miner) and Joseph Dunlevy. A graduate of BUHS, class of 1943, Ms. Dunlevy attended Rollins College and Arizona State University before graduating from Goddard College with a bachelor’s degree. In December 1966, she received the master of social work degree from Florida State University. In the summer of 1971, she did post-graduate work at Smith College.

Ms. Dunlevy was employed as a social worker for the Vermont Department of Social Welfare from 1953 to 1965. From January 1966 to 1990, she worked as a probation and parole officer for the Vermont Department of Corrections. At the time she began work for the department, Ms. Dunlevy was one of only two women probation officers supervising all female probationers and parolees. Her territory at that time covered Bennington, Rutland, Windham, Windsor and Addison Counties. At various times, she was stationed in Rutland and Bennington before being stationed in Brattleboro in 1977.

From 1967 to 1998, Ms. Dunlevy worked part-time evenings and weekends as a psychiatric worker for Monadnock Family and Mental Health Service in Keene, N.H., where she was engaged in family, individual and group therapy as well as emergency service.

Ms. Dunlevy was a member of the National Associations of Social Workers, Academy of Certified Social Workers and a past member of the National Associations of Crime and Delinquency and the Southern Conference of Corrections.

Ms. Dunlevy leaves a nephew, Charles A. Fritz III of Kintnersville, Pa., two grandnephews and nieces, Charles A. Fritz IV of Chicago, Ill., and Jennifer Maitland of Annapolis, Md.; and two great-grandnephews and nieces, Kitty and Charlie Fritz.

Funeral services for Mrs. Dunlevy will be on Monday, April 4, 2005, at 11 a.m. at the Ker Westerlund and Fleming Funeral Home in Brattleboro. Burial will be at the Morningside Cemetery in Brattleboro.
