Joan A. LaPlaca 1931-2011 SHAFTSBURY, VT Joan A. LaPlaca, 79, a resident of Bouplon Hollow Road in Shaftsbury, passed away Thursday August 11, 2011 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Joan was born in Willerney, Minnesota on December 2, 1931 the daughter of John and Dorothy Conway. She received her early education in Winsted, Connecticut schools and attended Housatonic Valley Regional High School. Joan was a licensed practical nurse and was licensed in four states. She worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Troy, N.Y., Waterbury, Connecticut Hospital, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington, Conn., Camden Bay Medical Center in Camden, Maine and the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. Joan loved to read, knit and spend time with her dogs. She enjoyed painting, especially folk art and cherished times spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. Joan is survived by her husband Joseph LaPlaca, Sr. of Shaftsbury, whom she married November 28, 1950, her children, Joseph LaPlaca, Jr. of St. Augustine, Fla., Thomas Charles LaPlaca of Murphy, S.C., Christopher LaPlaca of Atlanta, Ga., Mark Andrew LaPlaca of Storrs, Conn., Peter John LaPlaca of Daytona Beach, Fla., William Patrick LaPlaca of Bennington, Mary Ann Colegrove of Bennington, Frances Mary LaPlaca-Bentz of Torrington, Connecticut, Marian LaPlaca of Jacksonville, Fla., Catherine Fusco of Bennington and Claudia LaPlaca of Shaftsbury, thirty-six grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her daughter Colleen LaPlaca who died in 1997 and her sisters Patricia, Catherine and Dorothy. FUNERAL NOTICE: A mass of Christian death and burial will be celebrated Tuesday morning August 16, 2011 at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. A prayer service will precede the mass at 9:15 at Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home 213 West Main Street, Bennington, Vermont. Interment will follow in the family lot in St John the Baptist Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be held Monday evening August 15, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.
