Joan Outhwaite Sillin 1919-2010 Joan O. Sillin, 91, formerly of Lyme, Conn., died peacefully in Bloomfield, Conn., on Sunday December 19, 2010. Joan, daughter of Leonard Outhwaite and Katharine Borden Graves was born on September 22, 1919 in New York City. She grew up Bennington, Vt., and lived her adult life in Greenwich, Conn., LaGrangeville, N.Y. and Lyme, Conn. Joan was the loving spouse and partner for 55 years, until his death, of Lelan F. Sillin, Jr. Joan was cherished as a wife, mother, grandmother, and as an active community member. She received her B.A. followed by her M.A. with Honors in English from the University of Michigan in 1942. She met Lelan at the University of Michigan and they married in September 1942. She taught English Literature at Rosemary Hall from 1947 to 1950. She was instrumental in starting the first organization for the developmentally disabled in Poughkeepsie, NY during the 1950s. She served as President of Planned Parenthood of Connecticut from 1978 -1980. She then served on the national board of Planned Parenthood. Joan served on the Board of Trustees of the Florence Griswold Museum in Lyme CT and was President of the Board from 1988 - 1992. Joan was a passionate equestrian, hiker, birder, and a collector and supporter of the arts. Among many organizations she was member of the Millbrook New York Hunt Club, the National Organization of Women and The Cosmopolitan Club of New York. She is survived by four sons, Lelan F. and his wife Katharine of Lexington , Massachusetts, John O. and his wife Linda of Potomac, Md., Andrew B. of New Paltz, N.Y., and William B. and his wife Elizabeth of Sunderland, Mass. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great grand children. She is also survived by two sisters, Anne Mauer of Columbia, Md. and Lynn Pulsifer of Brunswick, Maine. Joan was pre deceased by her loving cousin Edward P. Borden of Norwalk, Connecticut. Mrs. Sillin's funeral arrangements are managed by Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, Old Lyme, CT. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made to Florence Griswold Museum in Lyme, CT or the National . A private burial will be on December 24 in Lyme, CT.
