Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Joel E. “Shaker” Pierce, 81, a longtime resident of Bennington, died Friday, March 11, 2005, at the Vermont Veterans Home following a brief illness.

Born in Bennington Aug. 22, 1923, he was the son of the late Joseph W. and Leona (Baker) Pierce. He received his education in the Bennington schools.

Joel was a World War II Army veteran.

He married the former Julia Allard in Bennington on Aug. 12, 1944. Mrs. Pierce died April 13, 1985.

In earlier years, Joel was employed as an auto mechanic at various garages, including the Liggett Bosworth Volkswagen dealership on Northside Drive. He later owned and operated Ruskin’s Taxi and later Pierces Automobile Appraisal Service. Joel lived in Siesta Key, Fla. from 1982 until 1996 where he was employed as the superintendent at Casablanca Villas and Apartments.

He was a former member of American Legion Post 13 in Bennington. For many years he held a pilot’s license and enjoyed recreational flying. He also was an active bowler at the former Mid-Town Lanes and more recently served as a volunteer at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Linda Pierce of Bennington; two granddaughters and their families, Shari Smith, her husband Darrell and their children Dalton and Logan and Lisa Pierce, her children Marleigh, Brudd and Keely and their father Michael Greene, all of Bennington; a close family friend, Kelly Delapena of Nashua, N.H., her husband Steve and her two daughters, Meaghan and Morgan; several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Richard J. Pierce, who died in 1997, and by eight brothers, Francis, Harold, William, Carl, Alfred, Ormal, John and Joel “Mike” Pierce and three sisters, Lillian Colo, Janet Tannenbaum and Harriet Hart.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Wednesday, March 16, at 11 a.m.

Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Entombment will take place in Park Lawn Chapel, with burial to be in this cemetery in the spring.
