HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- John A. “Coogie” Mahar, 76, died Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2006, at the Vermont Veterans Home in Bennington. He formerly resided on River Road in Hoosick Falls and was the husband of the late Shirley (Weller) Burdick Mahar, who died in 1996. John and Shirley were married on Oct. 3, 1969.

John was born on July 9, 1930, in Hoosick Falls, son of the late John A. and Mary (Hyland) Mahar. He was also the stepson of the late Stephen Labanowski. John attended St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls and was a veteran of the Army, serving in Korea. He worked as a butcher at the Grand Union in Hoosick Falls and the Village Highway Department, retiring several years ago. John served as the village judge for 14 years.

He was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, a member of the American Legion Post 40 and a former member of the V.F.W. Post 8417.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Cook and Patricia Carknard, both of Hoosick Falls; his stepchildren Judy Brownell and her husband Jeff, John Burdick and his wife Terri, and Jeff Burdick; and several nieces and nephews. His sister Catherine “DiDi” Brownell, two stepbrothers, Sylvester and Leonard Labanowski, nephew Eddie Carknard, and great-nephew Michael Hackett predecease him.

Funeral services will be at 10:15 a.m. on Friday at the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main St., in Hoosick Falls. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 a.m. from the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street. Burial will follow the mass at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Hoosick Falls. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Michael Hackett Scholarship Fund or St. Mary’s Academy through the funeral home.
