Obituary Condolences

John Allan Ryan 1952 - 2009 PUTNEY, VT John Allan Ryan died peacefully at his home in Putney on July 24, 2009, after an 18-month struggle with Merkel Cell Carcinoma, a rare and little understood cancer. John attended the Smithsonian's Museum Conservation Institute, a graduate-level course of study designed to prepare experienced and skilled woodworkers for careers in furniture conservation. John was an avid backcountry skier, fly fisherman, and sportsman. He will perhaps best be remembered for his prowess as a gourmet chef whose kitchen implements were as varied as his culinary skill and included a blow torch for finishing off the crème brulee. Holmes, and his daughter, Hayley Ryan of Putney, Vt., his parents, Betty Ryan and Al Ryan of Williamsville, N.Y., his brothers, Jim Ryan of Myersville, Md., David Ryan of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Chris Ryan of Kenmore, N.Y.; his sisters, Mary Zimmerman of Cheektowaga, N.Y., Elizabeth Murray of Williamsville, N.Y., Martha Hunt of Williamsville, N.Y., plus many friends around the world and in the Putney and Brattleboro communities in particular.
