1918 - 2016 HOOSICK FALLS, NY Mr. John Anthony Ashton, 97, died early Wednesday morning, February 10, 2016, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. He was born in Adams, MA on September 1, 1918, a son of the late Raymond and Bertha (Anthony) Ashton, and attended Adams schools. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living relative of the famous women's suffragist Susan B. Anthony. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving with the US Navy in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and participated in the liberation of the Philippines, receiving 2 battle stars, among numerous other decorations. Mr. Ashton worked as a machinist, and later, a manager in the Naval Ordnance division of General Electric in Pittsfield, MA, retiring in 1981 after 38 years of service. While working at GE, he received several patents for machining methods he invented. He was a member of Adams Post 160 America Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Berkshire Lodge of Masons. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, fishing, geology, and was an avid football fan. He was the last of the Adams Ski Runners, who used to ski the famous Thunderbolt Ski Trail on Mt. Greylock in Adams in the 1930's. His wife, the former Kathleen M. Baker, whom he married on June 21, 1941, died on June 14, 2005. He is survived by a daughter, Kathleen Golinski and her husband, Doug, of Hoosick Falls; three grandchildren, including Kelley Robinson, Aymee St. Pierre and her husband, John; and John Robinson, five great-grandchildren, including Jack, Owen and Katherine St. Pierre, and Jacob and Michael Robinson. He was predeceased by a sister, Evelyn Louison, and by a brother, Robert Ashton. FUNERAL NOTICE: A graveside funeral service with military honors will be held in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams, on a date to be announced in the Spring.
