Obituary Condolences

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- John B. “Jerry” Huttlinger Sr. passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at Adirondack Medical Center due to complications from a heart attack. He died one day before his 82nd birthday.

He lived on Saranac Avenue in Lake Placid, which had been his home for 52 years.

Jerry was raised in New Rochelle and New York City. He attended Iona Preparatory School in New Rochelle, the University of Michigan, and New York University, where he majored in accounting. He was the youngest son of Carl F. and Retta Burns Huttlinger.

He began his career in public accounting at Arthur Andersen & Co. in New York City. He left the firm to move to Lake Placid, where his family had been summer residents at the Lake Placid Club since 1935. In Lake Placid, he met Anne Lewis, and they were married at St. Agnes Church on Oct. 7, 1950 by the Rev. Michael Kelly. They both loved the beautiful Adirondack region and decided at that time to make Lake Placid their home.

Jerry opened a public accounting practice in Lake Placid and he taught mathematics and shop at Northwood School. The Huttlingers also operated a tourist cottage business for several years at the Saranac Avenue residence that they purchased in 1953.

In 1967, Jerry and Anne purchased the Adirondack Audit Company public accounting firm in Saranac Lake. Jerry remained active in the business until recently. He was devoted to the business and gained a lot of satisfaction from maintaining precise books and records for his clients, He also enjoyed preparing tax returns and negotiating with various tax authorities on behalf of his clients.

Jerry developed a love of classical music early in life by listening to recordings and performances by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Classical music was always playing at the office and at home. He was also an avid football fan. His weekends during the fall were always planned around the schedules of the Michigan Wolverines and the New York Giants. He was not pleased with the outcome of the 2005 Rose Bowl.

Jerry’s many interests included traveling, fine food, photography, model trains and tropical fish.

His happiest times were family gatherings; he delighted in the company of his wife and children. Most of all, he enjoyed sharing experiences with Anne. They traveled frequently and had many memorable trips throughout New England and eastern Canada.

Anne predeceased Jerry on Jan. 19, 2004. Jerry is survived by his two sons: John B. Huttlinger Jr. of Lake Placid and James M. Huttlinger of Baltimore, Md.; two daughters, Retta Huttlinger of Starksboro, Vt. and Tierney Beck of Bennington, Vt.; and three grandchildren, Katie and Lauren Back of Bennington, and John B.
