John B. Kennedy, Sr. 1937-2011 BENNINGTON John B. Kennedy, Sr. , 74, of School Street in Bennington, died on January 31, 2011, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following along illness. He was born in Bennington on January 28, 1937, a son of the late Alvin J., Sr. and Alila (Carpenter) Kennedy. He was a 1955 graduate of Bennington High School and in the Air Force form 1955 until 1959. John managed the W. T. Grant Restaurant in Bennington, owned and operated The Dinette Restaurant on North Street from 1968 to 1975. He later worked at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center from 1976 until his retirement in 2005. He was active at St. Peter's Episcopal Church and Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church, both in Bennington. He belonged to the following organizations; Bennington Rescue Squad, The Bennington Fire Department, Knights of Columbus Council #307 in Bennington, Tucker Lodge #48 F&AM of North Bennington, Red Mountain Lodge #63 F&AM of Arlington and Red Mountain Order of the Eastern Star in Arlington. John was a member of the York Rite Bodies in Bennington and Demolay Conclav of the Red Cross of St. Constantine stationed in Rutland. He was a member of the Sons of the American Legion and a Life Member of the American Legion He had many hobbies including his interest in President Kennedy, making albums of Rescue Squad history, playing trombone and other instruments in local bands. Survivors include his wife, Emily, of Bennington; daughter Katharine Flanigan and husband Scot of Bennington; daughter Audrey Virginia Kennedy of Bennington; son Jon Bruce Kennedy, Jr. and wife Debbie of Naples, Florida; three step-grandchildren; Michael, Amy and Eric, five step great-grandchildren; Austin, Tori, Jacob, Carley, and Lake'la; his sister Audrey Smith of Gibbon Glade, PA; a brother Robert Kennedy of Bennington; several nieces and nephews. John is predeceased by two brothers. Alvin Kennedy of Cambridge, N.Y. and Edward Kennedy of Bennington. At John's request there will be no calling hours. A private graveside service will be held in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to either the Bennington Rescue Squad or any company of the Bennington Fire Department through the office of the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
