John F. Behan

1944 - 2016 John Francis Behan, age 71, a resident of Gage Street in Bennington, died on Saturday afternoon, June 18, 2016, following a long illness. He was born in Bennington on December 15, 1944 and was the son of the late John and Catherine (Cronin) Behan. John received his education in Bennington and graduated in the Class of 1963, and later graduated from Champlain College with a degree in Criminal Justice. He married the former Anna Corcoran on September 14, 1963. Mrs. Behan survives. John was a Police Officer in Bennington for thirty-two years, and a Bennington County Sheriff Deputy for ten years. John had been a firefighter in Bennington as well for forty- three years. He was a member of Eagle Hose Company Department, 1st Assistant 3 years, 2nd Assistant 3 years, and Chief for 3 years. John was a Justice of the Peace for many years, and thoroughly enjoyed performing weddings in the area. John enjoyed woodworking, creating furniture pieces for home and and his children's homes. Including cradles for grandchildren. John loved traveling with Anna, family and friends to vacation spots including the Caribbean and parts of Maine. Besides his wife, John is survived by his children: Colleen Behan-Hattat (Greg), Shannon Behan, John Behan (Keri), Kathleen Winney (John). He leaves his grandchildren; Javery Hattat, Rowan Behan, Shane, Catherine and Jessica Winney and great granddaughter, Kaylin. John is also survived by one sister, Barbara Galli and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, John is also predeceased by a granddaughter Elli Winney, brother Thomas Behan, niece Christine Behan and a special aunt Agnes Behan FUNERAL NOTICE: A prayer service will be held on Thursday morning, June 23, at 9:30 am at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St in Bennington followed by a Memorial Mass at Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10:00 am. Interment will follow in the family lot in St. John's Cemetery in North Bennington. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4-7 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the VNA and Hospice, 1128 Monument Avenue, Bennington, VT 05201 or the Vermont First Responders Memorial Fund, RR 2, Box 2160, Pittsford, VT 05763 in care of the Vermont Police Academy, and may be left at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home. Members of the Law Enforcement Community are asked to meet at the funeral home om Wednesday afternoon at 3:55 pm to pay their respects. Fire Fighters are asked to meet at the funeral home on Wednesday at 6:15 pm to pay their respects.
