Obituary Condolences

CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. -- John C. Calef Jr., 65, died Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, Vt., following a long illness.

He was born Aug. 9, 1938 in East Orange, N.J., the son of the late John C. Calef Sr. and Brace (Bowen) Calef.

John was a 1956 graduate of Chatham High School and received an associate’s degree from St. Joseph’s College in Bennington. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

His employments included Asgrow Seed in Cambridge from 1969 to 1979 and then Globe Union in Bennington from 1979 until his retirement in 1994.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Cambridge and his hobbies included horse racing and watching the stock market.

Survivors include two sons, Duane L. Calef and his wife Lorrie of Eagle Bridge and John C. Calef III and his wife Kanda of Reston, Va.; two daughters, Tammie L. Payne and her husband Gregory of Coraopolis, Pa. and Denise M. Surman and her husband Stephen of Ft. Plains; eight grandchildren, Richard Russell, Duane Calef Jr., Nathan Calef, Darcy Calef, Ashley Wulff, grace Wulff, Justyn Payne and Davin Payne.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 22 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Paul Baker, pastor, officiating.

Calling hours will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21, at McClellan Funeral Home, 19 East Broadway, Salem.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Road, Loudonville, NY 12211.
