POWNAL -- Mr. John Chester Foster, 85, a well known resident of Route 7, died unexpectedly on Monday morning, Sept. 4, 2006, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Mr. Foster was born in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., on June 27, 1921. He was raised by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Foster and his aunt Daisy Foster in their Bennington Battlefield Park home in Walloomsac, N.Y., where his grandfather was caretaker.

He received his education in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and was a graduate of Hoosick Falls High School. He married the former Ruth Cartwright on Oct. 18, 1942. A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army as a rifleman. Upon his honorable discharge, he settled in his present home in Pownal and began working for Wesley Buzzell in the building construction business. He later went to work for the former Henry M. Tuttle Co., where he worked for 35 years, retiring as the service manager in 1986.

Following his retirement, he went to work at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home for several years, where he was able to keep active in the local business community. Mr. Foster was very active in local church work his entire life; in 1996 he became the Protestant chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, where he was recognized by the state of Vermont for chaplancy at the veterans home as the Rev. John C. Foster; he was currently still serving in this capacity. He had been instrumental in sustaining the Chapel Road Church of God and had served as interim pastor.

Always willing to help others, he had received an award from the Vermont Veterans Home as “Volunteer of the Year.” He had also been a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross and volunteer at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. Mr. Foster looked forward with anticipation to regular visits with his son Wesley and great-granddaughter Arianna in Maryland.

He leaves his wife of 63 years, Ruth G. Foster, of Bennington; his son, Wesley and his wife, Gini, of Owings Mills, Md.; great-grandson, Ryan Matthew Foster, of Littlestown, Pa.; great-granddaughter, Ashlie Nicole Arigo, of McSherriestown, Pa.; great-great-granddaughter, Arianna Foster, of Littlestown; cousins and many close friends. He was predeceased by his grandson, Matthew Foster, who died Dec. 16, 1989.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 8, at 10 a.m. at the Four Veterans All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home, with the Rev. Philip Garippa officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in the Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge, N.Y. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be present.
