Obituary Condolences

POWNAL -- Funeral services for John C. Foster were held at the Four Chaplains All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home on Friday morning with the Rev. Philip Garippa officiating.

The service opened with violinist Wesley Baggett playing “Adoration” by Felix Boroski. The congregation, accompanied by organist Louise Gauthier, joined in singing “Mansion Over the Hilltop,” “Sheltered in the Arms of God” and “Goodby, World, Goodby.”

Burial with full military honors followed in the Ryan family lot in Woodlands Cemetery in Cambridge, N.Y., with the Rev. Garippa offering the committal prayers. The military honor guard from the Stratton Air Base was under the direction of Sgt. Lutt. The American flag draping the casket of the World War II veteran was folded by Sgt. Lutt, Sgt. Holmes and Spc. Lopez and presented to Mr. Foster’s son Wesley by Sgt. Lutt. Taps was sounded by bugler Sgt. Sheppard, assisted by Spc. Geib.

Serving as bearers were Milton Hattat, Greg Hattat, Javery Hattat, Steven Kauppi, Robert Brown and Jack Raines.

Among those attending the services and calling hours at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home were staff and residents of the Vermont Veterans Home, Southwestern Vermont Medical Center and Bennington area clergy. Mr. Foster was presently serving as the chaplain at the Vermont Veterans Home.

Mr. Foster, 85, a resident of Route 7 in Pownal, died unexpectedly Sept. 4 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Funeral arrangements were under the care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home.
