ARLINGTON -- Mr. John F. O’Gorman, 85, a resident of Arlington, died Monday, Jan. 16, 2006, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mr. O’Gorman was born in Lawrence, Mass., on March 5, 1920. He was the son of the late Michael J. and Gertrude (McLean) O’Gorman. Growing up in Lawrence, he attended local schools and graduated from Lawrence High School, class of 1939. Following high school, he entered the U.S. Army where he served in the South Pacific, including Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1949 at the rank of corporal. Upon his return from the military, he enrolled in Burdett College in Boston where he graduated with a degree in business administration. He worked in the aircraft industry for Hamilton Standard and then for the IRS in Holyoke, Mass., as an accountant from which he retired.

He had lived for many years in East Longmeadow and then in Lawrence, where he cared for his sisters. He relocated to Nashua, N.H., in January 2005.

He had recently moved to Arlington to be nearer his son, Gary, and his family. He was married to the former Evelyn Brent. She died in August 1989. Mr. O’Gorman was an avid horse race track enthusiast and was very good at reading the horses and tracks. He also enjoyed spending time near the ocean. He will be remembered as a devoted husband to his wife, Evelyn.

Survivors include his son, Gary, and his wife Joan O’Gorman of Arlington; a brother, William O’Gorman of Swanzey, N.H.; a sister, Gertrude Hynes of Sacramento, Calif.; grandchildren Joshua, Jesse, Anna and Joseph O’Gorman; and his companion, Carolyn Durgin of Nashua, N.H. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Edward O’Gorman, and sisters Catherine O’Gorman and Elizabeth “Betty” O’Gorman.

A service of remembrance will be held at the Federated Church of East Arlington on Saturday, Jan. 28, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Thomas Truscott, interim pastor, presiding.

A memorial reception will follow in the church’s Bailey Hall; all are invited to attend.

The family suggests memorial gifts be made to either the Arlington Nursing Association or Arlington Recreation Park in care of the Arlington Chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 528, Arlington, VT 05250.
