MECHANICVILLE, N.Y. -- John G. Cross Jr., 75, of North Main St. and former longtime resident of Hemstreet Park, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 2003 at Hillcrest Commons, Pittsfield, Mass., after a brief illness.

Born in Salem on June 6, 1928, he was the son of the late John and Gladys Neil Cross Sr.

Mr. Cross was a heavy equipment operator most of his life, working for William Dailey Construction Co. of Vermont, Wever Petroleum of Hemstreet Park and William J. Dyer Construction Co. of Hemstreet Park.

During the Korean War, Mr. Cross served his country with honorable service in the U.S. Army.

A member of the American Legion Post 69, of Arlington, Vt., John was a sportsman, who enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Mechanicville.

Survivors include his loving wife Marilyn Buck Cross, whom he married July 1, 1961; adoring children, William A. Stroffoleno of Cohoes and Virginia Bishop of Bennington, Vt.; two sisters Vivian Cross and Yvonne Dorr, both of West Arlington, Vt.; and nieces and nephews. Mr. Cross was pre-deceased by a baby daughter, Debbie Cross.

A funeral service will be conducted on Thursday at 10 a.m. at the DeVito-Salvadore Funeral Home, 39 S. Main St., Mechanicville.

Calling hours at the Funeral Home on Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. Burial with military honors at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville on Friday at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the John Ahearn Rescue Squad, PO Box 669, MechanicviIle, NY 12118.
