John E. "Jack" Gardner 1930-2012 BENNINGTON John E. (Jack) Gardner, 82, a resident of Northside Drive, Bennington, died Monday, May 14, 2012 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a long illness. Born in Bennington February 9, 1930, he was the son of the late Cleon Gardner Sr. and Lena (Allen) Gardner. Jack received his education in the Bennington schools. A veteran of the Korean War, Jack served in the U.S. Air Force from 1947 to 1954. Jack married the former Mary Doyle at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington on April 19, 1954. Jack was employed for 30 years at Fairdale Farms in Bennington. Following his retirement he worked part time for Evans News. An avid fan of both the Boston Red Sox and the Dallas Cowboys, Jack also enjoyed hunting and fishing. His favorite pastime was time spent with his family. The family would especially like to thank both Sharon Moore of VNA & Hospice and the nursing staff on East Wing at SVMC for the caring and loving care of Jack. Survivors include his wife, Mary Gardner, of Bennington; four children, Julie Benoit of Pittsfield, Mass., James Gardner and his wife, Angel, of Lexington Park, Md., Patricia Squiers and her companion, Harvey Simmons, of Schaghticoke, N.Y., and Steven Gardner of Bennington; seven grandchildren, Cody and Jamie Carpenter, Kimberly Sanders, Michael Gardner, Dylan, Tyler and Hannah Gardner; a brother and sister-in-law, James and Helen Gardner, of Pittsfield; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Jack was predeceased by a grandson, Michael Carpenter; and by three brothers, Cleon Jr., Raymond and Robert Gardner. The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Thursday, May 17, 2012 at 1 p.m. with Rev. James Holden officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
