John J. Graves III

1938 - 2012 POWNAL, VT John James Graves III, 74, a resident of Peaks Pine Road, died Saturday March 2, 2013 at his home.

John was born in Bennington on December 5, 1938, son of John J. and Marion (Bolster) Graves Jr. He grew up in the Manchester area and graduated from Burr and Burton in 1957. While in high school at the age of 16 he joined the National Guard. On January 8, 1958, he entered the Navy where he served until 1964. He had been stationed in San Diego, Norfolk and Scotland where served as a SubTender for the USS Orion. At age 22, he became the youngest 2nd Class Petty Officer in the Navy, he received the Navy Good Conduct Medal in 1963. Using his skills learned in the service, he worked as a machinist throughout his life, retiring as a tool and die maker at the former Stanley Tools in Shaftsbury after 30 years.

John enjoyed the outdoors and all nature had to offer. He liked being with his friends and helping them with their car projects, especially the hot rods. He and his son, Erik would often go shopping for tools to help Erik with his business.

He leaves his son, Erik A. Graves and companion Audrey Hinckley of Shelburne; daughter, Alexandra "Sandy" and husband John Young of Colchester; brother, Peter A. and wife Louise Graves of Newburyport, MA; sister, Martha L. and husband Malcolm Starr of Providence, RI; granddaughter, Kala Graves; great-granddaughter, Olivia Aybar; step daughters Dee Dee and husband Walt Cross and Toni Degennero, all of Bennington; step grandsons Nick and Harvey Pratt and Matt Cross; nieces Terry Downey of Manchester, Kelly and Ray McGarvin and Marty Nolett, all of Hoosick Falls, and Tammy Bovey of Manchester; his former wives, Myra Graves and Judith Graves, both of Bennington, and many cousins.

His sister Gretchen Nolett died August 2012.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: John will be buried with his family at the Factory Point Cemetery in Manchester. The graveside service will be announced at a later date.
