John Gilbert Harwood

1922 - 2015 POWNAL John Gilbert Harwood, age 92, a resident of Maple Grove Rd. died on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at his home. He was born in the family home on Beech St. in Bennington, on Aug. 6, 1922. He was the son of the late John and Elizabeth Julia (Wehinger) Harwood. He received his education in Bennington. He served in Marine Corp during World War II, on the U.S.S. Belleau Wood, in the Gunnery Department, 5th Division. John married Eleanor Anna Kennedy, on April 6, 1947, she died in 1983. He then married the former Anna Marie (Blair) on Oct. 5, 1984. Before entering the service, John had worked at EZ Mills. Following the war, he went to work at A&P Supermarket as a meat cutter and then to First National Supermarket. For several years he ran his own meat cutting business on Beech Street in Bennington. He was a member of the American Legion Post #13 of Bennington. John was a great story teller. Besides his wife, he is also survived by his son, John (Joanne) Harwood, Bennington; his daughter, Anna Harwood of Bennington; his son, James Harwood of North Hoosick, N.Y.; and his daughter, Bonnie (Joseph) Benkowski of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; his step-children, Monty Leonard (Sherry) Bushee of Bennington, Mark Bushee of Bennington, Cindy Hester of Orlando, Fla., Matt Bushee of Pownal, and Amy (James) Ware of Bennington; eleven grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. John is predeceased by two brothers, Fred and Alden Harwood; a sister, Phyllis Butler; and his daughter-in-law, Gail Harwood. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held at Jacob's Well Fellowship, 29 Main St. in Cambridge, N.Y. on Sunday, Jan. 25, at 12:30 p.m. There are no calling hours scheduled. Interment will take place in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to Jacob's Well Fellowship through the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201.
