Dr. John Howard 1926 - 2012 EDELSTEIN, ILL Dr. John R. Howard, 85, of Edelstein passed away on Jan. 9, 2012, at his home. Born to Raymond E. and Amy Harbour Howard on Oct. 28, 1926, in Bennington, he is survived by his wife, Mary Lohmar Howard of Edelstein, his daughter, Dawn (Steven) Berard of St. Johnsbury, and his son, Joel R. (Cynthia) Howard of Newark. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Brooke (Robert) Colombie and Lee Mikel Howard of Pownal, VT, by four grandsons, Jason (Licia) Berard of North Thetford, Joel (Clare) Howard of Pownal, VT, Dane (Ari) Berard of San Diego, CA, and Trevor (Renee) Howard of Bennington, VT, 11 great-grandchildren, and his brother, Frederick Howard of Oakland, CA. After receiving his early education in Vermont and serving in the Marine Corps toward the end of World War II, he moved to Peoria, where he later graduated from Bradley University with a B.A. and also an M.A. He still later earned an L.L.B. from Blackstone School of Law and then a Ph.D. from American University. He joined the faculty of International Studies at Bradley in 1963 and later served as its director. Dr. Howard authored and edited a number of books and won many awards for teaching and public service. He was a very active volunteer and served as president of at least six organizations. He was also a member of the Bennington Masonic Lodge and a past commander of the Bennington American Legion. MEMORIAL NOTICE: Funeral services were held in Peoria on Jan. 13, 2012.
