Dr. John Gillam Irons Jr. 1927 - 2011 BENNINGTON Dr. John Gillam Irons Jr., 84, of Old Harbour Road in Woodford, died Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. John was born in Bennington, on July 10, 1927, the son of J. Gillam and Gladys Mae (Spicer) Irons. He attended local schools and also Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass. He was a 1950 graduate of Middlebury College and that same year married Gene Prescott Edgar. John attended Tufts University Dental School in Boston for four years, graduating and returning to Bennington in 1954, where he joined his father in the practice of dentistry. After returning to Bennington, he worked with the Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, and became a member of the Bennington Rotary Club. In the early 60's, he served as a Justice of Peace. He obtained a private pilot's license and also enjoyed hunting, skiing, traveling with his family, and camping trips. In 1970, he and his wife became owners of the Old Bennington Country Store and, then in 1972, Yankee Notions. Dr. Irons retired from Dentistry in 1986, and had spent much of his time since then enjoying a great variety of projects at his camp in Woodford. He and his sons built a home in Woodford where he and Gene enjoyed living for seven years. Survivors include his wife, Gene E. Irons of Woodford; their children, John G. Irons III (Jock) of Fairbanks, Alaska, Katherine P. Irons (Kerry) and her husband Scott T. Smiley of Kodiak, Alaska and Malcolm E. Irons of Bennington; a grandson, Max J. Smiley of Kodiak, and a brother, Dr. Howard S. Irons of Boca Raton, Fla., and Killington. Dr. Irons is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a brother, Albert Irons, who died in 2007. FUNERAL NOTICE: A service to celebrate the life of Dr. John G. Irons will be held at the Second Congregational Church in Bennington on Saturday, July 30, 2011, at 1 p.m. with the Rev Mary Lee-Clark officiating. The burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Dr. Irons may be made to the Bennington Museum through the office of the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201
