John J. Galli 1923 - 2008 SANDGATE John J. Galli, 85, a life long resident of the Arlington and Sandgate area, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in Arlington Sept. 6, 1923, son of Floyd and Mary Donahue Galli. He received his education in the Arlington schools and was a 1942 graduate of Arlington Memorial High School. A World War II Army veteran, John served with the 3rd Army, Battery B, 734th Field Battalion as a heavy artillery gun crewman in numerous battles throughout Europe, including Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He married the former Betty Chapman in Arlington on September 7, 1946. Mrs. Galli died July 7, 1983. In earlier years John was employed at Mack Molding, Union Carbide and Johnson Controls. He retired from the United States Postal Service in 1988. John was a life member of both VFW Post 6471 in Manchester and American Legion Post 69 in Arlington. He leaves his longtime friend and companion, Ann Pendleton of Sandgate; his children, Leon Galli of East Arlington and Lake City, Fla., Donna Gauthier, and her husband, Dennis, of Bennington, Joseph C. Galli of Arlington, and Kathy Stratton of Clearwater, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Dane Gauthier and his wife Stephanie, JP Galli, Jeff Galli and his wife Amy, Angela, Jillian and Elise Galli and Kristyn and Karyn Stratton; four great-grandchildren, Greer and Ayden Gauthier and Evan and Lauren Galli. John was predeceased by a grandson, Daniel Gauthier. He also leaves a sister, Lee Babayan of Westboro, Mass., Ann's two sons, Peter Corliss and David Pendleton and several nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: Memorial services celebrating the life of John Galli will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Saturday, Nov. 1, 2008 at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Private committal services will take place at the family lot in St. Columban's Cemetery in Arlington. Following the services at the funeral home on Saturday a reception for family and friends will take place at the American Legion Post 69 in Arlington, VT Should friends desire contributions in John Galli's memory may be made to the Bennington Veterans Honor Roll Fund through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
