John Kennedy, Jr. 1929-2011 NORTH BENNINGTON, VT John Kennedy, Jr. died May 29, 2011 at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, N.Y. following a brief illness. He was the son of John and Anna (Loehlein) Kennedy, Sr. John was born in Bennington, Vt., on September 12, 1929. He graduated from Bennington High School in the Class of 1947, and enlisted in the U. S. Air Force where he served for four years. Following several years at Burt Brothers Clothing Store, in 1958 he opened the first Sherwin-Williams Paint Store in Bennington at 485 Main Street. John was a charter member of the Bennington Jaycees, he served as club President and received the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award in 1956. Later, a member of the Bennington Rotary Club, he served as President in 1963, District Governor in 1982, and helped start the Bennington Catamount Rotary Club in 1988. He was a delegate to the Council of Legislation in 1992 when Rotary was opened to women members. In May 2008 he celebrated fifty years in Rotary, with forty-two of perfect attendance. In 1951, he married the former Priscilla Norton and settled in North Bennington. He served his community as Village Moderator and Zoning Administrator for several years. While a Justice of the Peace, he performed seventy-six marriages. John was a longtime member of Tucker Lodge F & AM of North Bennington, the North Bennington Fire Department, and served on the local Water Board and Grandview Cemetery Board. John also was a longtime Bennington County Deputy Sheriff, and was active in Crime Stoppers, Inc. during the 1980's. He sat on the board of the Bennington County Humane Society at the time the building was enlarged. During the many winters he spent in Florida he volunteered at the Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island for ten years. John is survived by his wife, a son Norton Kennedy, three brothers, two sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 23, at 10 a.m. at Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington. There are no calling hours scheduled. Memorial contributions may be made to the Fund for North Bennington or to Rotary International Foundation through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St. Bennington Vermont 05201.
